It's amazing to see how schools are taking advantage of the web to better serve the school community but also students.

Working with a number of schools, I find it interesting how different schools use the web, regardless of the size of the school, they are all looking at technology and especially the web as tool that can allows them to easily distribute information to the school community, but more recently they are looking at different functionality which some would not normally see, for example student blogs.

When you think of a blog people think MySpace, or blogger.com.  In a schools case, using this functionality in conjunction with security and you now have a medium for students to produce creative writing to show their teachers, parents and class mates whom all can provide feedback and comments.

Other functionality I have seen schools use are student and parent portals, to which allows students to log in to a secure area of the site to download homework and other materials relevant to their schooling.  Same goes with Parents, in which they can log in to view online report cards and progress reports on their child, gone are the days when kids hide their report cards from their parents, or complain that they lost their homework, they can always log on to their school website and download what was required.

With all this additional functionality being added to school websites, it will be interesting to see how long it will before schools start using e-commerce to sell and supply uniforms and text books, I'm sure there are some already doing it.
