Bonus cool points if you recognise the reference in the article's title. Note that the American spelling of optimise is only utilised within this article when necessary.

Google launched their Website Optimizer tool in April 2008, after it'd been relatively hidden from public view since its release in 2007. Previously, would-be web optimisers had to sign up for a Google AdWords account, though they didn't have to advertise. Google's free service has been unchained and allowed to develop its own identity as a robust online marketing tool.

Why guess what site content and designs best convert your visitors, when you can find out directly from them?

This question is the basis of the Website Optimizer, which allows developers to create different two or more different page designs, and measure which is most successful at increasing website conversion rates and increasing visitor satisfaction - primarily by removing guesswork and allowing developers to clearly see what works, and what doesn't on their website.

Google have a blog set up that tracks the development of the tool, and provides tips on how to use it.

Here at Digicon, we're excited by the release of Google's Website Optimizer, as it'll allow us to further refine our consultants' design recommendations, which will further increase our clients' return on investment.
