Web design

In this day and age, when designing websites, it's not as simple as using a safe width such as 960 pixels anymore. There are so many factors that have to be considered right from the start of the project.

At Digicon our designers understand that websites need to be future proof and work on all kinds of devices including ones that are not even invented yet.

Responsive design

Responsive design is just one answer to the booming mobile market today. With mobile sales overtaking PC sales for the first time in history, last year, it is now clear that you can no longer allow your mobile site to take a back seat to your main site. With more and more traffic coming from mobile devices, you have to provide a complete experience for the user all the way from mobile to a 50 inch television.

Responsive design allows the website to respond to device width and orientation. The device used to access your website usually determines the way the user wants to use your website. This means that certain types of content that you might find on the desktop version of your site are not necessarily important to someone say, on a bus with a limited connection that needs to get straight into the content without seeing everything plus the kitchen sink.

Responsive versus dedicated mobile site?

Responsive

  • Single code base – Easier maintenance
  • Reactive - Each resolution gets an optimal design
  • Cost - Less expensive to maintain over the long term as new devices are released

Dedicated Mobile

  • Lighter weight – Quicker loads times
  • Separate code from desktop – Redundant images/code/functions can be omitted
  • Customisable – Offers greater customisation for the phone
  • Single Design - Less prone to visual bugs
  • Cost - Less expensive in the initial build

Scalable websites

Websites grow. We understand that. It is important that websites are built the right way the first time around. A scalable website is built in such a way that it is designed and coded to work like any standard ten page website but has the flexibility to grow to 100+ pages with the least amount of effort due to scalable foundations put in place.

In the long run, scalable foundations save both time and money. Often, the biggest killers in maintaining websites are the ongoing changes. These may seem like small changes but can take much longer than expected. Building websites with scalablity in mind allows us to kick back and watch your site grow with a lot less fuss.

Mobile first

Taking a mobile first approach to your website design allows you to focus on whats really important and what's just in the site to fill up space on the desktop version. Trimming the fat from your website increases not only performance on the mobile version but it also means the content you're adding to your website is valuable and important to the end user.

These are just a few of the techniques we use at Digicon that allow us to design websites that provide an enjoyable user experience and work across all devices and browsers.
